The Silver Bird offers you a unique opportunity to learn traditional silversmithing techniques to make your own jewellery. My studio is located 15 minutes by car from Cambridge. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced jeweller, my studio is the perfect environment to learn and perfect your skills. See some of the exciting pieces you could make below!
I believe that small groups are the best way to learn. I am able to give each student individual attention and tailor the curriculum to your specific needs and goals. My courses are designed to take you from the basics of jewellery making all the way to advanced techniques. I believe that having the right tools and equipment is essential to creating beautiful, high-quality jewellery; you'll have access to everything you need, and guidance on what to buy if you wish to invest in your own tools.

Hello
My name is Liz Taylor
I am the founder of The Silver Bird, an artisan jewellery studio based in a semi‑rural, South Cambridgeshire village.
I specialise in bespoke commissions, customisable contemporary pieces, and teaching traditional silversmithing techniques to learners of all levels. I’m a member of the Guild of Jewellery Designers and hold a Diplomas in Fine Jewellery and Advanced Jewellery Making from the London school.
Before becoming a full‑time jeweller, I spent 18 years as a secondary Design and Technology teacher, guiding hundreds of young people as they explored materials, developed ideas and created original, meaningful products. Alongside teaching, I completed my PGCE and a Master’s in Education at Cambridge University, focusing on creative idea generation.
I’ve taught adult silver‑jewellery classes across Cambridgeshire, and in 2024 I designed and opened my own purpose‑built home studio and teaching room. It’s a fully equipped, welcoming space with high‑quality tools and a layout designed to support beginners, improvers and early‑career jewellers alike.
Jewellery making with silver is the most addictive craft I’ve ever encountered, and that’s before you fall into the world of gemstones!! Whether your taste leans contemporary or classic, whether you’re learning for pleasure or exploring a career change, my aim is to help you fall in love with the process and achieve your creative potential. I’m committed to creating a studio environment that is supportive, inclusive, relaxed and empowering for every learner.
