Repair Terms and Conditions
Assessment & Eligibility for Repair
All items are assessed individually. In general, I only work on jewellery that is handmade or traditionally constructed. Factory‑made pieces (e.g., Pandora‑style items) may not be accepted for repair.
If an item is structurally compromised, poorly constructed, previously altered, or presents a high risk of further damage, I may decline the repair entirely. This protects both your jewellery and the integrity of the work.
Estimates, Fees & Refunds
All estimates are indicative and may change if additional work is required once the item is examined more closely. Any changes will be communicated before proceeding. The Silver Bird reserves the right to refuse any repair where the item is unsuitable for safe or successful work.
Repair fees cover:
-
Skilled labour
-
Bench time
-
Materials used
-
Assessment and handling of the item
Because these costs are incurred regardless of outcome, fees are non‑refundable once a repair attempt has been made, even if the repair proves unsuccessful.
Deposits
Repairs are normally paid upon completion. However, a deposit may be required for work involving special‑order materials such as gold, gold findings, replacement stones, or any components that must be ordered specifically for your piece. A deposit may also be requested for complex or time‑intensive repairs, or where the repair carries a higher‑than‑usual risk that has been discussed with the customer. Deposits are non‑refundable once materials have been ordered or work has begun.
Repair Attempts
Some jewellery cannot be guaranteed for successful repair due to its condition or the way it was originally made. Where risks exist, I will always explain them before proceeding. If you choose to go ahead, the work is undertaken on a best‑effort basis. This means I will carry out the repair to the highest professional standard possible, but success cannot always be guaranteed.
Damage During Repair
Where a piece is already weakened or compromised, further damage may occur during the repair process. If this risk is identified, you will be informed before any work begins. By approving the repair, you accept this risk.
Heat treatment may cause unavoidable colour changes, firestain, or surface marks, especially on older or previously repaired items. These are not considered faults. Heat-sensitive stones may require removal before repair. If removal is declined, The Silver Bird accepts no liability for heat-related damage. Stone settings may loosen during normal wear, particularly in older or delicate pieces. This is normal maintenance and not a fault of the repair. We do not guarantee repairs on mass‑produced or plated jewellery, as these items often cannot withstand standard repair processes. Any repair attempt on such pieces voids all existing guarantees or warranties, including those from the original manufacturer.
Replaced Materials
If components are removed during repair, such as stones, metal sections, clasps, or findings, I will return them to you if requested at the time of booking. If no request is made, removed materials may be retained or responsibly recycled.
Please note:
-
Damaged or worn parts may not be suitable for reuse
-
Removed components may be damaged or destroyed during the repair process
-
Stones removed intact will always be returned unless otherwise agreed
-
Plated components may lose plating during repair
If a fault covered by the guarantee occurs, I will repair or replace (at our discretion) any parts required and/or rectify the fault identified by the jeweller.
Liability for Items Left With me
I take all reasonable care to secure and protect items left with me. However, you acknowledge that some risk is inherent in jewellery repair. Liability for loss or damage is limited to the actual cost of repair or replacement, supported by an up-to-date valuation or original receipt.
High-value items are secure storage at my discretion.
Repair Guarantee
The Silver Bird guarantees the workmanship of your completed repair for 6 months from the date of collection. This guarantee covers faults arising directly from the repair process, including:
-
Re-loosening of tightened stones
-
Breakage at a soldered joint
-
Failure of replaced components (clasps, jump rings, etc.)
The guarantee does not cover:
-
Damage caused by misuse, impact, or exposure to chemicals
-
Normal wear and tear
-
Loss or damage to stones unless directly caused by the repair
-
Pre-existing structural weaknesses (thin metal, worn claws, cracks, prior repairs)
-
Issues arising from plated jewellery or heat-sensitive stones where removal was declined
Clients must notify me of any issues within the guarantee period and present the original receipt or job reference. Guarantee repairs do not extend or renew the original guarantee period. Repair timeframes are estimates and may vary depending on complexity, supplier delays, or workshop workload.
Photography
I may photograph items before and after repair for documentation or portfolio use. Identifying details will never be shared.
Postal Repairs
I do not accept repairs by post from outside the United Kingdom.
If sending items by post, you are responsible for correct and safe packaging. I cannot be held responsible for damage occurring during transit.
Insurance claims for items lost or damaged in transit must be made directly with the postal carrier. Return postage and insurance are charged at a minimum of £12, subject to change depending on item value and required insurance level. Where a warranty repair is returned by post, any postage costs covered will be at our discretion.
